Flying to Mexico for my first paid destination wedding has me deeply considering the relationships and experiences that led me here.
This wasn’t just a wedding. This is a family I’ve held close to my heart for nearly a decade. To be trusted with something as sacred as their wedding day — in Cancun, Mexico of all places — is an honor I don’t take lightly.
What unfolded was a fast-paced Friday to Monday venture. Quick, full, emotional, and deeply cherished.
A Quick Friday–Monday Venture
We landed in Mexico on Friday and went straight into celebration mode at Live Aqua Cancun — a beautiful, elevated resort in the heart of the hotel zone.
There was no easing in — just ocean air, warm light, and familiar faces welcoming us into the weekend. It felt less like work and more like stepping into a shared story I’ve been lucky enough to witness for years.
Whatever fumes we were running on from quick travel dissolved almost instantly into sun-and-ocean-breeze-fueled bliss.
The Welcome Party
Friday evening kicked off with a relaxed, joy-filled welcome party overlooking the Cancun coastline.
There’s something special about destination weddings. Everyone has traveled. Everyone has chosen to be there. The energy is different — intentional, present, fully invested.
Laughter came easy. Hugs lasted longer. And as the sun (and the espresso martinis) went down, the anticipation for the wedding day quietly settled in.
Wedding Day in Cancun
Saturday was wedding day.
From the quiet anticipation while getting ready to the ceremony overlooking the beautiful resort landscape and turquoise coastline of Cancun, every moment felt grounded in intention. The teary embraces. The steady hand squeezes. The dancing that carried on long after sunset.
It was everything a destination wedding should be — intimate, joyful, and deeply rooted in family.
Photographing this day felt less like documenting and more like preserving something sacred. I could barely steady myself behind the camera — my own tears drawn purely from the love and joy that filled the atmosphere of the Arvanitis wedding.
A Slow Exhale in Isla Mujeres
After the celebration wrapped, Ryan and I decided to soak up Mexico just a little longer.
We ventured to Isla Mujeres by catamaran — the kind of post-wedding exhale you don’t realize you need until you’re in it. We wandered through town, visited shops, sampled more tequila than we planned, made friends with locals, and allowed ourselves to experience the culture beyond the lens.
No timelines. No shot lists. Just presence.
By Monday, we were exhausted and nowhere near ready to return home — but we did.
A First of Many
Now I’m home, culling and editing thousands of images, reliving every moment.
This weekend marked my first paid destination wedding. It also marked a new chapter for DAY | STUDIO — and for Ryan, who officially debuted as my default second shooter.
More than anything, I’m left with gratitude.
For a couple so deserving.
For a family that trusted me.
For a dream that feels a little more tangible now.
This experience only deepened my love for destination weddings — the intention, the intimacy, the shared adventure of it all. It’s part of why I recently launched my Destination Wedding Grant, created to make travel weddings more accessible for couples who feel called to say “I do” somewhere meaningful.
